Workshops for ECEC Services

Find the help you and your staff need to feed and educate with confidence.

Managing Fussy Eating in the ECEC Setting

Female teacher with kindergarten children having lunch

This workshop is designed to help early childhood professionals understand what is going on, and learn how to support children who are not yet ready to enjoy nutritious foods and mealtimes.

Topics covered:

  • Children’s appetite: what affects it

  • Attitude and Talk around food: what we say and do matters (including using the term fussy eater)

  • Expectations and misconceptions: we are for evidence-based and not for opinions

  • Ellyn Satter’s Division of Responsibility: who does what at mealtimes

  • Strategies to avoid and deal with food refusal at mealtimes

  • Facilitating food curiosity: curriculum activities that support food education

This workshop is suitable for services that provide meals cooked in-house as well as home-sent (lunchboxes).

It’s for a closed group from a single service (childcare centre or preschool), so discussions can be more open and to the point without compromising privacy.

This workshop doesn’t cover feeding children with health conditions nor handling allergies and intolerances.

It’s 2 hours long with Q&A and discussions throughout, and delivered online. For on-site (in person) workshops, please contact us as it may attract extra cost to cover travel expenses.

This is also a great opportunity for services to boost their Quality Improvement Plan and their staff’s Continuing Professional Development.

At completion, participants will receive an attendance certificate and access to recording for seven days.

“Fern presented a face-to-face workshop with our centre cooks and educators from across our 11 centres. Everyone was engaged and intrigued with what Fern was discussing and the amount of knowledge she had around 'fussy' eating in ECEC. Our cooks and educators learnt a great amount of information and have already begun putting it into practice within their ECEC settings. Fern also gave real-life examples and perspectives which helped our staff be more relatable as we sometimes find ourselves in the same challenging situations. We are very thankful we had the opportunity to learn more from Fern and further develop on our own practices moving forward and would recommend Fern's workshop to everyone!”

  • Differences and Definitions

  • Dairy and Gluten: definitions, importance to a child’s nutrition, and alternatives

  • Practical suggestions from a nutritionist who is also a fellow educator and cook in childcare.

“I attended Fern's online talk [Allergies & Intolerances]. As an early childhood educator, I found it to be thorough and informative. Her presentation is coherent and engaging; a good blend of being scholarly and practical. I recommend listening to this talk and approaching Fern for any information and advice you may need regarding nutrition, food allergies, or any associated food issues.”
